Chapter 2. THE WEARY COUPLE.

THE WEARY COUPLE. (to be read on Dec 22)

(Continues from the story of THE DONKEY AND THE OX.)

- written for children by Aurrsa.

A man leading a donkey made his way across rough terrain. Guided only by the stars, one in particular, he carefully proceeded to his village to be counted for the census.

On the donkey, sat a heavily pregnant woman. She had her face covered by a veil, but there shone a radiant light all around her. The man held a lantern in his hand for it was a cold, silent and dark night.

In the distance, they could see the shimmering lights of the village they were heading for. Anticipating a warm welcome and good hospitality, they hastened towards it.

"Mary,"said Joseph to his wife, "Are you hungry? Or thirsty? We can stop awhile if you want."

Mary replied with a shake of her head. "The sooner we get to the village and find a room in the inn, the better. I am so weary that I can barely sit straight on this beast!"

They continued the journey, rejoicing in their hearts as the lights got brighter.

But alas, when they reached the inn, it was FULL.

The innkeeper was sympathetic, but what was he to do? He asked his wife to suggest an alternative.

"Rabbi Shekel might be able to help you." she said.

So they went, accompanied by the innkeeper's servant, to Rabbi Shekel's house. The house was in darkness. They knocked on the ornate door but no one opened it.

After several attempts, they gave up and returned to the inn. The innkeeper's wife, seeing the advanced state of Mary, beckoned to her husband and whispered, " They need help. She will deliver anytime soon. Why don't you ask Farmer Shalom to help? Surely he will have a room....?"

And so that is how Joseph and Mary reached Farmer Shalom's home.

Rest tomorrow. SHALOM.
