Chapter 4. WHAT A NIGHT!

WHAT A NIGHT! (to be read on Christmas eve)

(Continued from THE UNEXPECTED GUEST)

- written for children by Aurrsa.

Farmer Shalom and the weary couple made their way slowly to the stable where they were told they could rest the night.

As they neared the entrance, the stable animals, hearing their footsteps, stirred and...

Lo and behold!

WHAT A SIGHT THEY SAW.

The ox looked perplexingly at the donkey as if to say, "More animals??" Then they saw the humans accompanying the donkey. Now this was getting interesting. The farmer had never kept humans in their stable before!

The farmer took a broom to clean a section of the floor, and, with the help of Joseph, he quickly prepared a cozy bed of straw for them. His wife came in with blankets and some swaddling cloths for the baby to come.

The donkey, who had brought the couple, was by now already feasting himself on hay from the manger. After a good repast, he lumbered over to the water trough to quench his thirst.

"Making himself at home" snorted the ox, angrily, watching the whole scene with baleful eyes. His friend donkey however was curious about this new guest. After a while, he began asking several questions to which he got to know the origins of the couple.

(Well, if you dont know then maybe your Mommy can tell you if you ask)

Mary settled down to sleep after a meal, sent out to them by the kind farmers. Joseph set his lantern down in a safe place by the entrance and settled down to rest. After a while, he started dozing too.

In the still night, it seemed as if someone was singing. Very faintly, very far away. Who could it be?

The rest of this story tomorrow morning. Sleep well, little ones. God is almost with you.
