LETTER TO A PEDESTRIAN

Dear Pedestrian,

I don’t know your name but I am writing this to tell you how I fear you when I take my car on the road.

When I am in the driving seat, I have so many tasks to accomplish. I need to steer right, make sure I’m in the right gear and that I am in complete control of three small but very vital controls at the bottom which have to be coordinated perfectly to ensure safe driving.

I know it gets really crowded sometimes and you need to cross quickly at the spot that you see open but please remember to pause, look to your right and left and then right again to be sure that it’s safe to cross.

If you dart across, you will confuse me. I may not be able to brake in time and it could cause you severe injury. As for me, I will be devastated if that happens. So please, please, use a pedestrian crossing, preferably monitored by a traffic policeman and never run across it.

When you are using the kerb to walk and there is no pavement demarking the road from it, ensure that you are on the side facing the traffic. Then you will be able to see me coming and I will be able to see you and determine your intentions clearly.  Otherwise I am compelled to use my horn and imagine if all my fellow drivers keep honking all the while. What a terrible noise that will be!  As it is, I have to watch out for reckless motorcyclists and wobbly cyclists besides rashly overtaking driver buddies. Please don’t make me more stressed out than I already am.

You are a precious person to your family and I do not want to be the cause of their unending pain at your loss. With a little wisdom and patience, we both can ensure that our families have their loved ones safe back home.

With much love and prayers.

A Concerned Newbie Car Driver.
